We spend a lot of time telling people to relax at Tyler Goff Group. It’s even part of our branding slogan: “Rest easy. We got this!”

And we don’t just tell you to relax because we are eager to do the work for you, although we are.

But we also remind you and anyone else who will listen to relax because it is important to do in general.

Why Relaxing Is Important

Here are a few uncontroversial data points to be aware of: sitting is the new smoking, and stress is the number one killer of Americans of all ages

It’s true.

At first glance, you might think these two statements contradict each other.

“Wait,” you say. “First you tell me not to sit down all the time, then you tell me to relax?”

Be honest, though.

The vast majority of your stresses are not taking place while you’re standing up. They’re taking place at your desk, in your chair, on your couch, even in bed.

You’re not stressing out while you’re out for a run, dancing with the love of your life, or taking a nice nature walk.

The truth is, we do need to move more, which can be part of relaxing, but mostly, we just need to learn how to opt out of chronic stress, the real killer.

We all have little and big temporary stresses that we manage and then get through.

But when we put ourselves into a state of chronic stress, meaning we never turn our phones off, we never unplug from work, we never allow ourselves a moment to breathe, we are slowly killing ourselves.

Chronic stress is the leading cause of the 6 primary killers in the US, including heart disease and cancer.

How to Prioritize Relaxation

“Sure, sure, Tyler.” You say. “How am I supposed to prioritize relaxation, though? My life is so busy.”

The best thing you can do to prioritize relaxation is to build it into your day.

Set aside 10 minutes here for prayer. 10 minutes there for a walk outside into the sunshine. 10 minutes here for a social call on someone you love. And so on. Build in parts of your day that are stress free and designed to unclench your jaw, release your worries, and allow you to breathe freely.

In short, decide that it matters, and it will.

5 Tips for Relaxing

Now that you’ve agreed to working on managing your stress and relaxing more, here are some tips for just how to do that.

  1. Get Your Sleep

You’ve been hearing it for years, and you’ve probably responded with “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”

Yea? Well if you don’t sleep, you’ll be dead a lot sooner than you’d like.

Sleep is a huge indicator of what kind of day we will have as it allows our brains and the rest of our bodies to reset and repair themselves.

Get your 8 hours of sleep each night and you will find yourself a lot more prone to relaxation on demand.

  1. Meditate and Pray

You don’t have to be religious to meditate and pray.

A great quote I heard once says that prayer is asking and meditation is listening for the answer.

Even if you’re an atheist, you believe in something bigger than yourself, maybe a higher consciousness, or even just nature.

But you know there are answers out there to questions you have.

Pray on those questions, let them go, and then sit and listen for the answers.

Studies show that prayer and meditation are major contributors to destressing

  1. Exercise

It seems counterintuitive, but exercise is actually a huge form of relaxation. It speeds up your breath and heartbeat in the moment, but in the long term it lowers your resting heart rate and helps you breathe easier.

Even 20 minutes of day walking in nature can have a huge impact.

  1. Socialize

Kill two birds with one stone! Call a friend to hang out or take your spouse on a date and just chill.

Put your phones down, look at each other, talk, visit, laugh.

You’ll be relaxed in no time.

  1. Outsource

That’s right. There’s no better way to cut your stress than to let other people do your busy work for you.

Hire a cleaner, order out or arrange for food preparation delivery, hire a landscaper.

Buy back your time. And don’t then fill it up with more busy work.

And yes, if you are in the market to sell your house or buy a new one, or both, let your realtor handle it all! That’s what we’re here for.
